Byakuya Takes the Field! Dance of the Wind-Splitting Cherry Blossoms

In the western forest of Fugai, Byakuya Kuchiki faces Jin Kariya, the Bount leader who declines to take a stance and simply invites the captain to strike. Their opening exchanges reveal Kariya wields wind through an unseen Doll, matching Byakuya's Shunpo with his own speed and shrugging off early cuts. Kariya admits he sought out the head of the Kuchiki Clan to test himself and to shock the Seireitei by felling its most famous captain, needling Byakuya about avenging Rukia. Byakuya answers by releasing his Shikai, Senbonzakura, sending streams of blade petals after him.

Kariya blows the petals apart with a cloak of wind and crushes one between his fingers, declaring that with limitless air around him he can conjure a power to rival Senbonzakura. He traps Byakuya in a tornado with Windestanz, but the captain blasts free using Sokatsui and answers with Byakurai. Their duel accelerates into a blur of clashes that generate crackling electricity, ending in a mutual near-miss with each blade at the other's throat, both drawing blood. When Kariya renews Windestanz and Byakuya releases Senbonzakura once more, a savage petal tornado erupts around them, only for Ichigo Kurosaki to shear off its top with a Getsuga Tensho and drop into the fight uninvited.

Byakuya coldly warns Ichigo not to interfere, but Kariya heals his wounds by absorbing the Seireitei's high-grade Reishi, boasting the Bount are invincible while such energy fills the air. Ichigo answers with his Bankai, Tensa Zangetsu, trading rapid blows with Kariya until Byakuya, watching their speed, plants his sword and unleashes Senbonzakura Kageyoshi, a wall of petals that crashes down and separates the two. The three combatants end the hour eyeing one another across a torn ravine, none willing to give ground.

Away from the duel, Ganju Shiba's group realizes Uryu has slipped off toward Ichigo's Reiatsu, and Ganju wrings information from a beaten thug about Kariya gathering followers at a gambling house before deciding to contact the Bull of Kusajishi. In the village itself, Go Koga and Maki Ichinose rally the Rukongai residents against the Seireitei, and Koga proves the Bount's invincibility by having Ichinose slash his arm, then healing the cut with absorbed Reishi to the crowd's roaring approval.

The Byakuya, Ichigo, and Kariya confrontation is left unresolved, feeding directly into the following episode's three-way battle. The Bount cement their alliance with the disillusioned villagers of Kusajishi, framing the coming assault on the Seireitei as a fight for equality. Ganju resolves to learn more from within Kusajishi, setting up the wider Seireitei siege. A closing Shinigami Illustrated Picture Book has Sado quietly conclude that Ganju names his gang members as strangely as he names his boars.
