Casual Soul Realm Assault Trip!

The whole town has caught Don Kanonji fever, and Ichigo Kurosaki reluctantly attends a live taping of the medium's ghost-hunting program only because his father and sisters are devoted fans. Standing in the crowd outside a derelict hospital, Rukia Kuchiki quietly explains that a soul with a fierce attachment to a place can fuse into the ground as a Jibakurei and slowly rot into a Hollow. One such spirit, chained to the abandoned building, howls from the front steps.

Rukia intends to wait until the show ends before performing a proper konsō, since the transformation normally takes months. Kanonji ruins that plan by jamming his so-called Super Spirits Stick straight into the Jibakurei's Hollow hole, accelerating the corruption. Ichigo rushes the stage to stop him and is tackled by security. Urahara intervenes by knocking Ichigo out of his body, freeing his Shinigami form just as the tortured spirit shatters and reforms atop the roof as a full Hollow, dubbed the Demi-Hollow.

Believing the beast is an evil boss come to avenge the soul he purified, Kanonji refuses to flee and declares he will fight. Ichigo hauls him into the cramped hospital to keep bystanders safe, and the two are dragged through the halls and up to the roof by the flailing creature. There Kanonji admits the gap in their strength yet stands his ground, unwilling to abandon the children who watch his show. His Kanonball attack frees Ichigo's bound hands, letting Ichigo finally split the Demi-Hollow's mask.

Rukia lays out the nature of Jibakurei and Demi-Hollows, expanding the series' rules for how souls degrade into Hollows. Don Kanonji's meddling with the Super Spirits Stick directly creates the Demi-Hollow, and Urahara steps in to release Ichigo's soul from his pinned body. After the beast is destroyed, its dissipating form reveals the original spirit beneath, and Ichigo explains how a Hollow is born, leading Kanonji to grasp that his purifications had been creating monsters. Moved by the crowd's cheers, Kanonji finishes the broadcast and, to Ichigo's dismay, proclaims Ichigo his number one pupil.

The episode adapts material from chapters 27 through 32 of the manga and belongs to the Agent of the Shinigami arc. The anime reorders events so the broadcast begins first before flashing back to how Ichigo and his friends learned of it, and it trims Ichigo's internal narration about the show's ratings and his distrust of psychics. Several bits of blood and gore are toned down, including Ichigo's blade emerging from the Demi-Hollow's shoulder. The Demi-Hollow also loses the pigtail-like extensions its manga design carried on either side of its mask.
