Mission! The Shinigami Have Come

Still rattled after Yammy overwhelmed him, Ichigo has fallen quiet and stopped stepping into his spirit form. Rukia returns to Karakura High with reinforcements, greets him warmly, then floors him with a kick and yanks his soul body out through the window using her Gokon Tekko. She carries him across town to a waiting Hollow and shoves him into the fight to force him to act.

Ichigo flounders, because a vision of his inner Hollow keeps swallowing his focus, spreading a mask across his face and taunting him. Rukia names his dread of losing his friends and of the monster festering inside him, then challenges him to grow strong enough to crush it. Her words land. He unwraps Zangetsu, flashes into the air, and cuts the Hollow down in one clean stroke.

Afterward, both at school and later at the clinic, Rukia makes Ichigo apologize to Orihime while the reinforcements throw his classmates and family into chaos. In his bedroom, Renji finally lays out the enemy: Arrancar are Hollows who shed their masks to steal Soul Reaper power, now emerging fully formed thanks to Aizen's Hogyoku.

Renji explains why Soul Society changed course. With three captains lost, the recent Bount trouble still fresh, and the ranks needing to rebuild, the plan had been to simply watch until Aizen moved, but the fully developed Arrancar surfaced early and invaded the living world. Yamamoto, serving as interim commander until a new Central 46 forms, assembled the strike team, picking Rukia for her closeness to Ichigo and letting Renji recruit the rest.

Hitsugaya delivers the gravest news. Effective Arrancar are made from Menos of at least Gillian rank, and the Menos divide into three tiers. Gillians are the mindless giants shown in textbooks, the very kind Ichigo once fought. Above them sit the rarer, cunning Adjuchas who command the Gillians, and at the summit stand the human-sized Vasto Lorde, whose strength exceeds that of a captain. Should Aizen field ten or more of them, Soul Society would be doomed.

In Las Noches, Ulquiorra and Yammy return to report to Aizen, who invites them to share what they learned before a gathered audience of Arrancar that includes Starrk, Harribel, and others.

The episode adapts chapters 196 and 197 and belongs to the Arrancar arc. It functions as a major exposition installment, introducing the Menos hierarchy and the concept of the Vasto Lorde for the first time.

The anime expands several comedic and dramatic beats, including Ichigo's surging spirit pressure before the finishing blow, his use of Shunpo, and extended family antics at the clinic. A short Shinigami Illustrated Picture Book segment features Komamura preparing a special Gigai, which his lieutenant imagines as an ordinary dog. Compared with the manga, generic students replace named classmates, the strike team's arrival draws different reactions, and the silhouettes watching Ulquiorra's report are drawn as recognizable future characters.
