Summary
Long before the present day, Captain Shinji Hirako and his lieutenant Aizen meet with Urahara, Hiyori, and Mayuri to discuss a troubling pattern. For a month, souls across the Rukongai have been vanishing, yet only their bodies disappear while their clothes remain behind, which should never happen after a real death. The Ninth Division has already been sent to look into it.
Out in the fields, Captain Kensei Muguruma bickers with his lieutenant Mashiro until cries for help draw the squad to a Hollow menacing three boys. Kensei tears the captured child free and destroys the creature with his released blade, Tachikaze. He gruffly orders the sobbing boy to smile, learns his name is Shuhei Hisagi, and praises it as strong, which only makes the child weep harder.
Mashiro then finds ten empty uniforms in the brush, the exact number of Soul Reapers sent ahead to investigate. Alarmed, Kensei dispatches word to Central 46 and the Twelfth Division, orders camp set up, and sends Hisagi home before pressing deeper into the area.
