Summary

After Kaname Tōsen fells the wounded Uryū Ishida with a single toll of Suzumushi, the focus shifts to Sōkyoku Hill, where Yoruichi Shihōin lays out the terms of Ichigo Kurosaki's crash course in Bankai. She produces the Tenshintai, a tool that drags a Zanpakutō spirit into physical form, and explains that Ichigo must force Zangetsu into submission within three days rather than the years the feat normally demands. Ichigo impatiently stabs the doll, manifesting Zangetsu, who buries the field in hundreds of identical swords and challenges his wielder to find the one that is truly him.

While Ichigo is battered again and again, side threads track the fallout of the invasion. Yasochika Iemura grumbles through his medical journal about the strain on the Fourth Division, Hanatarō Yamada is disciplined by Retsu Unohana, and Renji Abarai smashes out of his cell after remembering his history with Rukia. Gin Ichimaru appears to free a despondent Izuru Kira, and Kenpachi's group, having recovered Orihime, resolves to help her because she believes Ichigo still lives. In an underground relief cell, Uryū wakes beside a bandaged Ganju and Sado, who deduces that the Shinigami are keeping the intruders alive for questioning and vows they need only heal and wait for Ichigo to come.
