Summary

Byakuya observes Yamamoto sealed within a pyramid-shaped barrier that a ring of Zanpakutō Spirits works to maintain, and Muramasa hints that the captured commander is central to his larger design. Learning the location from Yoruichi, a rescue team of Ichigo, Kenpachi, Yachiru, Shunsui, and Ukitake enters the maze-like cave from two directions to reach him.

The guardians peel the party apart one by one. Yoruichi slips free of Haineko and Tobiume with Utsusemi, Shunsui faces the twin forms of Katen Kyōkotsu, Ukitake is drawn into the childish games of Sōgyo no Kotowari, and Kenpachi finally gets the fight he wanted against Tenken and Gonryōmaru. Ichigo, sent ahead, is ambushed and bound by Kazeshini but breaks loose in his Bankai and puts the spirit down with a Getsuga Tenshō. Reaching the barrier at last, he is scorched testing its flames yet steels himself to shatter it.
