Summary

Fifteen-year-old Ichigo Kurosaki leads an otherwise normal life aside from his lifelong ability to see spirits, driving off vandals who disturb a roadside memorial and helping a lingering child pass on. At home he trades blows with his rowdy father, Isshin, who runs the family clinic, while his sisters Karin and Yuzu look on. That same night, Rukia Kuchiki descends into Karakura Town, sensing a powerful presence after two Hollows slip in from Hueco Mundo.

The following day, tremors and destruction spread near the Kurosaki home. When a masked Hollow chases the dead girl Ichigo had been helping, Rukia intervenes and cuts the creature down before slipping away. That evening she appears in Ichigo's room, stunned that he can see and even kick her, and introduces herself as a Shinigami sent to guide souls and purge Hollows.

Key Events

Rukia binds Ichigo with Bakudō #1. Sai, performs Konsō to send a wandering Plus to Soul Society, and sketches out the difference between ordinary spirits and soul-devouring Hollows. Their lesson is cut short when Fishbone D smashes into the clinic and seizes Karin, drawn by Ichigo's suppressed Reiryoku, which had been leaking out through his contact with the dead girl and masking the Hollow from Rukia's senses.

Ichigo shatters Rukia's binding spell through sheer will, and when Rukia is gravely wounded shielding him, she offers her only remaining option: to run her Zanpakutō through him and pour her power into his body. Ichigo impales himself on the blade and absorbs far more than she intended, transforming into a Shinigami with an enormous sword of his own. He cuts through Fishbone D's mask and destroys it, ending the night as a newly made Soul Reaper.

Notes

The series premiere adapts Chapter 1 and opens the Agent of the Shinigami arc. The anime makes several changes from the manga, most significantly removing Isshin from the household attack by sending him to an overnight meeting, spreading events across two days rather than one, and swapping which sister is captured. Numerous gory manga details are toned down, and Kon appears in the closing preview to introduce himself before Ichigo cuts him off.
