Summary

Broken and screaming after Ichigo Kurosaki's blade tears into him, Renji Abarai drops before Ganju Shiba and Hanataro Yamada and glimpses Rukia Kuchiki standing where his opponent had been. The vision drags him back to Inuzuri, a lawless southern district of the Rukongai, where a young Renji and his companions survive by thieving. A scheme to lift water from a vendor goes sideways until a small girl slides in and topples the old man, then leads the boys clear. That girl is Rukia, who owns nothing yet gives freely, dividing stolen sweets and scolding a bully about happiness being meant to share.

The children form a makeshift family. A passing Shinigami, once of Inuzuri himself, feeds a collapsing Rukia and warns that spiritual power brings hunger. Renji strains to conjure a faint orb of Reiryoku, only for Rukia to shape a far larger one with ease, yet she swears to stay in the Rukongai beside her friends. Years pass, three friends die, and the pair resolve to become Shinigami and enter the Seireitei. At the Shin'o Academy the two are mocked as slum-born, and Renji vows to silence the nobles. Then the Kuchiki Clan moves to adopt Rukia, and Renji, too frightened to object, cheers her on and watches her leave his life in tears.

In the present, Renji admits his cowardice, hauls himself upright, and seizes Ichigo by the collar. Confessing that his true failure was never halting Rukia's rise into a doomed nobility, he pleads with Ichigo to rescue her in his stead, and Ichigo quietly agrees.

Key Events

Renji's memories establish his lifelong history with Rukia and the poverty of Inuzuri. A former Inuzuri resident turned Shinigami hands the starving children food and explains the cost of spiritual power. Rukia displays far greater natural Reiryoku than Renji. The deaths of their childhood friends push both to enroll at the Shin'o Academy. The Kuchiki Clan's offer to adopt Rukia separates the two, with Renji failing to intervene. Back in the present, Renji concedes defeat to Ichigo and entrusts Rukia's rescue to him.

Notes

Airing as the thirty-second entry of the series, the episode adapts Chapter 98 and belongs to the Soul Society: The Sneak Entry arc. It opens with D-tecnoLife and closes with Hokiboshi. The adaptation expands much of Renji's flashback beyond the manga, softening the old man's pursuit and reworking how Rukia trips him. While reflecting after his plea to Ichigo, Renji recites the poem from the eleventh volume, and the unnamed Shinigami who feeds the children closely resembles a character tied to Ashido Kano in a later episode.
