The Ise Clan is a matrilineal line of priests in Soul Society who conduct its sacred rites. In place of personal Zanpakutō, each generation's head inherits the ceremonial blade Shinken Hakkyōken, a treasure that turns a god's power back against its wielder's foe.
Descended through its women, the Ise Clan is a priestly lineage of Soul Society whose members oversee and perform ritual observances. The family's role centers on religious rites rather than combat, setting it apart from the warrior houses around it.
Records show that only daughters have ever been born to the clan, so its women have always taken husbands from outside families. A grim tradition follows: any man who marries into the line is said to meet an early death, a phenomenon called the Ise Curse that reportedly strikes even those who leave to wed elsewhere. The women of the family also lack their own individual Zanpakutō. Instead, each head inherits a single sacred sword, and because every member is spiritually bound to it, none can imprint her essence onto an Asauchi.
That sword, Shinken Hakkyōken, is an ornate ceremonial blade set with eight mirrors along its oar-like face. It can draw the power of a divine opponent into itself and scatter it in every direction, reflecting attacks back at their source. Wielding it, Nanao Ise severs Lille Barro's hand and turns his own devastating blast against him. The weapon passed to Shunsui Kyōraku after Isuzu Ise cast it away to break the curse, a loss the Central 46 punished with her execution, before Shunsui restored it to Nanao during the Quincy Blood War.
Nanao Ise stands as the current head of the clan and the wielder of Shinken Hakkyōken. Her mother, Isuzu Ise, held the position before her and is now deceased, having been put to death for discarding the family's sacred sword.
Supplementary material fills in further color: Kubo has explained that the Ise women are prone to weak eyesight, which is why both Nanao and Isuzu wear glasses, and that the clan's ancient rituals were carried out to placate an entity called Amatsu. Though Shunsui and Nanao both refer to Shinken Hakkyōken as a Zanpakutō, it lacks Shikai and Bankai forms, binds to no single soul, and does not purify Hollows.

Five Bleach female characters, ranked and settled. Yoruichi sits at number five, the spot nobody expects, and our number one is an Arrancar with a soft heart....

The transformation everyone knows, the follow-up question nobody would touch. Why we made a smooth R&B track about the golden glow Dragon Ball never talks about....

As head of the clan she wields the ceremonial blade Shinken Hakkyoken, which she and Shunsui call a Zanpakuto even though it lacks Shikai and Bankai forms and does not purify Hollows.
