Overview

Fashioned after a color-coded sentai squad, this team is the creation of Don Kanonji, who hopes to reverse the slide in his television program's popularity. He rallies Ichigo's sisters Karin and Yuzu Kurosaki, the young shop hands Ururu Tsumugiya and Jinta Hanakari, and the modified soul Kon as a mascot, casting them as protectors of Karakura Town. They fill the gap while Shinigami like Rukia Kuchiki and substitute Ichigo Kurosaki are stranded in Soul Society, all while overlooking the actual soul reaper posted to the area in their absence.

The group is a largely comedic fixture, surfacing mostly in anime episodes and omake chapters rather than the main storyline.

Role

The team's purpose is to hunt Hollows and shield the town, dressed in sentai costume with the red member acting as leader. Their moment comes during the Soul Society arc, where they appear in episodes 33 and 50 and provide light relief against the tension of the main plot. Kanonji struggles to manage the squabbling Karin and Jinta, whom he pits against each other for the coveted red slot, while Ururu quietly shoulders most of the actual fighting.

The stretch's emotional thread belongs to Yuzu, who adopts a stray she names Raku, unaware it is a spirit drawing Hollows to the town in droves. When Yuzu falls from a building, Raku awakens its own power to save her before passing on, leaving her in tears. The episodes also offer a closer look at Kanonji, the Kurosaki twins, Jinta, and Ururu.

Notable Members

Ururu Tsumugiya serves as Karakura Pink, a meek but astonishingly strong Urahara Shop worker who fights at an anti-Shinigami level and carries a multi-barreled shoulder cannon. Karin Kurosaki and Jinta Hanakari share the red mantle, Karin channeling her spiritual power through a fierce soccer kick and Jinta swinging an oversized iron club. Yuzu Kurosaki takes yellow, the most innocent of the bunch, able to perceive Hollows only through Raku's influence.

Don Kanonji himself is Karakura Golden, a spirit medium whose staff and slow-moving orb of light can fell weak Hollows. Kon rounds out the lineup as Karakura King, a modified soul with powerful legs who is pressed into service as a living ball for Karin's finishing move. A temporary member, Raku, becomes the flame-wreathed lion Kanonji dubs the Karakura Lion Jet.
