Overview

Each regular number carries a price of 380 Kan, though special editions climb higher; the mid-summer issue covering the Ryoka Invasion sold for 680 Kan. The Reishi Printing Company handles production, using stock made entirely of Reishi, and readers may sign up to have copies delivered straight to their door.

To draw in subscribers, one mid-summer special threw in a sake-flavored rice cake treat as a bonus. The staff also gather feedback on existing features and fresh ideas through dedicated postcards, though any submission carried by a Jigokuchō is refused.

Role

By Yamamoto's account, the publication began as a way to raise morale and forge unity among the Shinigami, and it has run without interruption for more than ten centuries. Earlier copies were reproduced on a gariban, a stencil-and-ink-drum contraption whose grinding gari-gari noise lent the tool its name.

The Editing Department sits in District 1 of the Seireitei. Shūhei Hisagi presently serves as acting Editor-in-Chief, a post once held by Kaname Tōsen and Kensei Muguruma. Beneath them, a roster of named staffers handles layout, design, and the writing of articles.

Notable Members

A wide swath of captains and lieutenants supply columns. Renji Abarai penned a three-part battle-tips serial, Byakuya Kuchiki covers matters of etiquette, and Mayuri Kurotsuchi writes a surprisingly popular piece on medicine drawn from his own experiments. Nanao Ise's advice column ranks among the three most-loved features, while Tōsen's justice-themed serial won over female readers once he began folding in cooking recipes.

Other regulars include Jūshirō Ukitake's children's adventure novel, Tōshirō Hitsugaya's ice-carving feature, Suì-Fēng's assassination-minded columns, and Hisagi's own poorly received teaching serial. The Shinigami Women's Association has chipped in bonus trading cards and a division-aptitude quiz.
