Overview

Among the four premier noble families of Soul Society, this house carries the hereditary duty of leading the Onmitsukidō. Its members bear the title of Tenshi Heisōban, rendered as Defender of the Realm, and act as keepers of the Hōgu and Bugu, treasured tools and armaments held to be divine gifts. Each head is charged with guarding the Tenshi Heisō, a formidable spiritual weapon passed down from the Heavens, and whenever that head also holds a captaincy in the Gotei 13, the covert corps answers to them as well.

Role

Clan members train as consummate masters of Hakuda, favoring unarmed combat as their signature method to devastating effect. Their manor rises within the Seireitei, and their reach stretches across the Onmitsukidō, the Second Division, and the wider Gotei 13. Among their prized relics are the Shihōin Shield, which Jūshirō Ukitake and Shunsui Kyōraku used to destroy the Sōkyoku, and the Tenshi Heisō: Hissaki Kumoi, a web of razor-sharp wires Yoruichi once turned against Yhwach.

Notable Members

Yoruichi Shihōin stands as the twenty-second head and bears the title of Princess, with her younger brother Yūshirō following her as the twenty-third. An earlier member named Chika has since died. Suì-Fēng and Marechiyo Ōmaeda serve the family as retainers while holding senior commands within the Onmitsukidō. Per Tite Kubo, Yoruichi's knack for taking a cat's form is a Shihōin quirk, and children in line for the family title receive names built from numbers and words marking times of day.
