Shinigami Research and Development Institute

Kisuke Urahara conceived and built the institute roughly 110 years ago, shortly after his promotion to captain of the Twelfth Division, intending it as an arm of that division. It has since produced a great many of the tools that aid the Shinigami and now falls under Mayuri Kurotsuchi's direction. Both men who have led the organization also held the Twelfth Division's captaincy, which underscores the tight bond between the two.

The institute pursues two central tasks. The first is inventing fresh technology and spiritual instruments, work carried out around the clock by the finest technicians in Soul Society, whom Mayuri personally recruited. The second is gauging spiritual waves and managing communications, watching the living world for stability and overseeing transmissions across the two realms. It divides into specialized labs, among them the Reinō facility, the Spiritual Wave Measurement Lab, and the Communication Research Section, plus a Reishi Inspection Squad that reads particle concentrations. Its creations range from the Gokon Tekkō and soul phones to artificial soul pills, Gigai upkeep, and Kenpachi Zaraki's power-sealing eyepatch.

Mayuri Kurotsuchi presides over the institute with Akon as his vice-president. Its senior researchers include Rin Tsubokura, assigned to the wave-measurement lab, and Hiyosu, while Nemu Kurotsuchi rounds out the notable staff. Kisuke Urahara stands as the founder, having served as its first president during his years as the Twelfth Division's captain before his exile.
