Gentei Reiin

Also called the Soul-Limiting Symbol and rendered by Viz as the Spirit Restriction Seal, the Gentei Reiin is a spiritual limiter imposed on high-ranking Shinigami before they set foot in the World of the Living. The mark takes the shape of the insignia unique to the officer's own division.

Whenever a captain or lieutenant crosses into the human realm, the seal trims roughly four-fifths of their spiritual energy, a safeguard meant to keep their raw power from inflicting excessive collateral harm on the surroundings. When a crisis demands their full might, an officer may petition to have the restriction lifted, invoking the release command Gentei Kaijo. Members of the Royal Guard shoulder an even stricter constraint, the Blood Oath's Seal, which holds back their strength so it cannot throw the Three Worlds out of balance.

The limiter applies to the captains and lieutenants of the Gotei 13 dispatched to the World of the Living, who normally fight at reduced capacity until a release is granted. The Royal Guard, charged with defending the Soul King, live under the heavier Blood Oath's Seal for the same protective reason.
