Function

Their chief purpose is guiding a Shinigami through the Senkaimon so that the crossing between Soul Society and the living world bypasses the dangers of the Dangai. They also work as couriers, relaying important commands from one reaper to another. Within the Seireitei the insects are tended by members of the Gotei 13, a chore that usually falls to its newest and least seasoned recruits.
