Summary

Rukia lays out the grim logic behind the purge. As Balancers, the Shinigami must keep souls split evenly between the living world and Soul Society, but the Quincy's habit of destroying Hollows outright choked that cycle and threatened to topple both realms, so their refusal to stand down sealed their fate. Ichigo, unsure who was right, wades into the Hollows and admits he now knows Uryu's history.

Uryu waves off the ancient legend and reveals his true wound: his teacher Soken died before his eyes. In flashback, the gentle old man argues that blame no longer matters once his people have fallen and only prevention does, and he repeatedly urges the Shinigami to let Quincy serve as first responders. They answer with warnings to keep out of their affairs, and when five Hollows corner Soken, help arrives two hours into the fight, an hour after he has already died. Declaring he must prove Quincy strength on his own, Uryu refuses Ichigo's aid, so Ichigo kicks him into a Hollow, reminds him that Soken wanted the two peoples to fight as allies rather than rivals, and hauls him upright to face the horde back-to-back.
