Beaten to his knees and told the fight is over, Ichigo answers with a sudden surge of power that turns the tables on Renji, only for a far deadlier foe to intervene from the sidelines in the space of a single breath.
Certain of his win, Renji lectures the fallen Ichigo about how a blade's size reflects its owner's strength, then moves to end things. Unable to bear it, Rukia flings herself at his sword arm and begs Ichigo to run, though she has always known he would never retreat. Sure enough, Ichigo takes up his sword again, rises, and fixes his eyes on the lieutenant as the wrappings on his hilt tear loose and his spiritual pressure erupts.
In an instant the boy who was dying moments ago flashes past Renji and opens his shoulder, then splits his brow and knocks him sprawling even as Zabimaru rises to block. His visor shattered, Renji cannot fathom where the strength came from, and finds himself pinned by the crushing weight of Ichigo's aura. Feeling no pain and brimming with fresh power, Ichigo closes in to finish the duel and claim his victory.
Before the blow can land, Ichigo discovers that most of his blade has vanished, sheared away without a sound. He spots Byakuya standing far off with the missing steel resting in his hand, and cannot believe the cut was made from such a distance. Calmly reaching for his own sword, the captain flickers to Ichigo's side using Senka, then reappears behind him as a gaping wound splits open across his chest.
