A brawl erupts the instant Ganju Shiba grabs Ichigo's face, and the self-styled boss of west Rukongai proves a slippery opponent, sinking Zangetsu into ground he turns to sand. Ichigo answers with bare-knuckle strikes learned in his karate days, until a blaring alarm sends Ganju's gang into a panic.
Ganju's aggressive greeting earns him a punch across the room, and when he cries foul, Ichigo notes that Ganju started it by shoving his face and barking questions. The elder reels off the newcomer's string of self-appointed titles, from the deep-red bullet of west Rukongai to its boss and its number-one Shinigami hater, all supposedly self-proclaimed. Ganju tackles Ichigo outside, where his boar-riding gang blocks Orihime and Uryu from interfering. Yoruichi silently despairs as Ichigo refuses to walk away from a fight fueled by wounded pride.
Because Ichigo is unarmed, Sado hurls Zangetsu to him, and the duel turns technical. Ganju scoffs that size is not everything and uses Seppa to soften the earth into sand, swallowing the blade to its hilt before kicking Ichigo away. Ichigo adapts, trapping a kick and slamming a fist into Ganju's face while boasting that he once out-fought Tatsuki at karate. He bloodies Ganju's nose with a hard counter, yet the stubborn brawler stays upright, earning grudging respect. As Ganju readies another round, a loud alarm rings out and throws Taichi into a panic.
Ichigo and Ganju trade blows in and around the elder's house; Ganju debuts his sand technique Seppa to trap Zangetsu, while Ichigo relies on hand-to-hand skill to stagger him. Neither settles the fight before a sudden alarm interrupts them.
