At the First Division barracks, Yamamoto reports that Kensei and Mashiro's spiritual pressure has vanished for reasons unknown and calls it the worst possible outcome, an affair that has grown from a Rukongai problem into a matter of the Gotei 13's pride. When he announces he will send five captain-class Shinigami, Urahara arrives and begs to join, only to be refused and calmed by Yoruichi, who reminds him that going himself would insult Hiyori, the officer he chose for the task.

Yamamoto assigns Shinji, Rose, and Love to the Rukongai, keeps Yoruichi on standby, sets Kuchiki, Kyōraku, and Ukitake to guard the Seireitei, and orders Unohana to ready her medical facilities. Urahara is pointedly held back, deepening his guilt over Hiyori.
