Renji insists he can still read every move and hurls Hihiō Zabimaru at his captain, but Byakuya answers with Hadō 33, Sōkatsui, loosed without a single word of incantation. As Renji reels at such effortless Kidō, Byakuya reveals the spell was meant to break up the serpent, not to blind him. He then appears behind Renji and explains that a Bankai's enormous size, matched to its spiritual pressure, demands a further decade of mastery, and that Renji is not ready to wield his in combat.

Undeterred, Renji attacks again, only for Byakuya to bind him with Bakudō 61, Rikujōkōrō. Reminding Renji that he too commands a Bankai, Byakuya lets his sword sink into the ground as though it were water and calls forth Senbonzakura Kageyoshi, raising vast rows of blades that dissolve into countless petals. In an instant Renji's bonds, the building behind him, and his own body are shredded, dropping him bleeding to the ground. Byakuya likens the difference in their class to the fable of the monkey reaching for the moon reflected on the water, telling Renji his fangs will never touch him before turning to leave.

The Japanese title translates as "To Those Capturing the Moon," the name Viz Media used for the chapter. It appears in the seventeenth volume, Rosa Rubicundior, Lilio Candidior, and was adapted into episode 52, Renji, Oath of the Soul! Death Match with Byakuya.
