Ichigo works out that Uryu has lost his Quincy powers, sensing nothing of his spiritual pressure, and keeps quiet about it. At school the new transfer student, Shinji Hirako, takes the desk beside him and offers friendship, but Ichigo keeps darting off after Hollow alarms, leaving Shinji quietly satisfied that the boy is exactly as he had imagined.

That night Ichigo leaves Kon planted in his body while he answers another Hollow call, cutting the creature down with Zangetsu. He runs into Zennosuke Kurumadani, the Shinigami now assigned to the district in Rukia's place, who has never heard of a Substitute deputy. The meeting is cut short when Shinji lunges out of the air with a drawn Zanpakuto, forcing Ichigo to block, then presses a finger to his lips and warns that Ichigo's unchecked spiritual pressure rings out across the world and draws dangerous notice. As Ichigo demands to know his meaning, a Menos Grande tears out of a Kumon behind Uryu. Nearby, an oblivious Kon roams the streets in Ichigo's body, unaware that a rebuilt, far larger Grand Fisher has emerged from another Kumon and mistaken him for Ichigo.

The sixth chapter of the twenty-first volume deepens the mystery around Shinji and confirms Uryu's loss of his Quincy abilities, while unleashing two new threats on Karakura Town at once. It was drawn on for anime episodes sixty-four and one hundred ten.
