Standing over the wounded Menos, Ryuken Ishida finishes it with a Heilig Pfeil aimed above its Hollow hole, dismissing High-Speed Regeneration as meaningless to anyone who strikes first. He reveals himself as the sole heir to the late Soken Ishida's craft and the last Quincy, producing the five-pointed cross that once belonged to Uryu's grandfather.

When the Menos launches a final ambush from behind, Ryuken destroys it outright, then rebukes Uryu for rushing off to Soul Society and squandering the meager power he had. He offers to restore his son's abilities on a single condition: that Uryu never again entangle himself with the Shinigami. Elsewhere, Kon flees through the streets in Ichigo's body as the rebuilt Grand Fisher, tired of waiting for a transformation, pins him down to crush him where he lies. A barrier suddenly flares from the charm knotted to Ichigo's shirt and shields Kon, and Isshin Kurosaki arrives in a Shinigami uniform with a Zanpakuto at his hip, offering to face Grand Fisher in his son's stead.

The eighth chapter of the twenty-first volume caps the volume's family theme by unveiling both Ryuken and Isshin as hidden warriors: one the last Quincy, the other a sword-bearing Shinigami. Its cliffhanger sets up Isshin's clash with Grand Fisher. The chapter was adapted into anime episodes one hundred ten and one hundred eleven.
