Tōsen draws his hand slowly down his face as Komamura and Hisagi look on in dread, a burst of Reiatsu veiling the scene. When the haze lifts, his Hollowfied form stands revealed, fitted with a sleek mask and chest armor. Hisagi can barely name the change before Tōsen confirms it and exploits the pause to land a brutal slash, blocking Komamura's answering Shikai and kicking him down into the town below.

Tōsen bitterly notes the irony that the Gotei 13 embraced Ichigo, a Shinigami-Hollow hybrid much like himself, and asks why his own choice earns only scorn. Komamura argues that Ichigo never chose his condition, whereas Tōsen, an elite Shinigami with no need for it, willingly let the power corrupt him. Tōsen dismisses this as outdated thinking about the line between Shinigami and Hollow, but Komamura clarifies that his real objection is Tōsen casting aside friends and subordinates to chase forbidden strength. Before Tōsen can reply, a chain coils around his neck and slams him into a rooftop, where Hisagi pins his throat and lifts his blade. Tōsen chides him for holding back, and Hisagi concedes the strike carried no malice, since his master taught him never to wield needless force. He asks how Tōsen can betray his own teachings and confront what now feeds his fear. Answering only with his sword, Tōsen runs Hisagi through and kicks him from the roof, admitting his true dread across the past century was blending into the Shinigami ranks and dying a pointless death, until Komamura's Bankai erupts to cut him off.

Tōsen debuts his Hollowfied form and overpowers both Komamura and Hisagi, revealing that his deepest fear was a meaningless death lost among ordinary Shinigami. He impales Hisagi and casts him from the rooftop, only for Komamura to respond by releasing his Bankai.

The seventh chapter of volume 44, VICE IT, it was adapted into episode 289, Byakuya vs. Kenpachi?! The Melee Commences. The title captures Tōsen's readiness to embrace a power his former comrades regard as monstrous.
