Aizen and Gin take their first steps into Karakura Town as Ichigo sinks into an inner world now submerged in water. Panicking toward the surface, Ichigo is dragged down by a young man who assures him he can breathe. Confused, Ichigo asks who he is and insists Zangetsu should be present; the stranger scolds him for rudeness toward the one who taught him to breathe, then draws Tensa Zangetsu and lowers his hood. He notes it is Ichigo's first time entering the inner world while in Bankai, which is why the boy fails to recognize him, and identifies himself not as Zangetsu but as Tensa Zangetsu.

In the Dangai, Isshin senses that Ichigo has gone in and warns that Zangetsu will run wild, recalling that his own blade, Engetsu, behaved the same way. He explains that Zanpakuto are reluctant to hand over their techniques and predicts Ichigo will soon learn why. Knocked onto a rooftop, Ichigo stops himself from calling the youthful figure old man and instead asks about the Final Getsuga Tensho. Tensa Zangetsu refuses to teach it and demands to know why he should care about what his wielder wishes to protect, insisting their goals are entirely different as he strikes Ichigo down again.

In Karakura, a middle-aged man wakes and wanders the streets, approaching Aizen and Gin to ask what is happening. Warned to keep away, he collapses dead, and Aizen explains that Humans without Reiatsu perception cannot sense his presence yet perish from its sheer force. Gin then notices Tatsuki Arisawa carrying Michiru Ogawa, and Aizen recalls from Ulquiorra's report that they are allies of Ichigo Kurosaki.

Ichigo meets the younger Tensa Zangetsu, who rejects his plea to learn the Final Getsuga Tensho and declares their aims incompatible. In the waking world, Aizen's Reiatsu alone kills a passerby, and Gin identifies Tatsuki as one of Ichigo's allies.

The 409th chapter advances the Deicide arc within the forty-seventh volume, END OF THE CHRYSALIS AGE. It begins Ichigo's inner confrontation with Tensa Zangetsu and was adapted into anime Episode 302, The Final Getsuga Tensho!? Ichigo's Training!
