Ichigo's inner Hollow and Tensa Zangetsu fuse into a single foe embodying his full power, forcing a one-on-one struggle. In Karakura Town, television psychic Don Kanonji hurls himself at Aizen to shield Tatsuki, and Rangiku Matsumoto arrives.
The wellspring of Ichigo's despair proves to be his inner Hollow, whom he assumed had vanished after their last clash. The Hollow reminds him of their bargain, that Ichigo had to survive until his return, and mocks the boy's failed effort to destroy him. Zangetsu explains that the horned mask is the same one Ichigo wore when he beat Ulquiorra, a form Ichigo dreads most, in which raw destructive power overwhelms his heart and blocks a proper Hollowfication. When Ichigo asks whether he should simply fight and defeat the Hollow, Zangetsu answers that he will face not one being but both at once, and the two spirits merge before his eyes into a single entity that names itself two halves of one whole, all of it Ichigo's own strength.
Pinned by Aizen's crushing Reiatsu, Tatsuki cannot even shift Michiru off her back and believes she is finished, until a large blast of energy slams into Aizen. It comes from Don Kanonji, who announces that a hero has arrived and delivers his signature line about the spirits being with everyone. As the smoke clears around an unharmed Aizen, the villain asks who he is, and Kanonji, offended at not being recognized, is cut off by an exasperated Tatsuki who orders him to go home.
Feeling the weight of Aizen's power, Kanonji still refuses to flee, unwilling to lose his standing as a hero in children's eyes, and lunges with his staff. Aizen warns that any Human who touches him will cease to exist, and just as the staff is about to land a mysterious hand halts it. At that moment Rangiku Matsumoto reaches Karakura Town, her intentions still unclear.
Ichigo's inner Hollow and Tensa Zangetsu combine into one opponent representing his complete power. Don Kanonji attacks Aizen to protect Tatsuki but is outmatched, and a hidden hand stops his strike as Rangiku Matsumoto appears in Karakura Town.
