Late at night Ichigo turns up at Ikumi Unagiya's door, drawing a scolding about his missed shifts and repeated requests for time off while young Kaoru listens in. Sensing his distress, Ikumi urges him to lean on her, and he thanks her before slipping away. He mulls over Kugo's account of Tsukishima, once Xcution's leader, who devised the plan to pass their powers to a Substitute Shinigami only to murder that Shinigami and his own donors before vanishing. Kugo suspects the recent strikes on Uryu and Orihime are bait meant to pull Ichigo away from the group.

Wandering the streets, Ichigo glimpses his father Isshin slipping into an alley to confer with Urahara before the two head off together. Mindful of Kugo's warnings about Urahara, he considers trailing them but holds back given how weak he still is, resolving to reclaim his powers soon. He later returns to the hideout, where Riruka drops him into a fish tank and Jackie, waiting inside, introduces herself as his next opponent.

Kugo recounts Tsukishima's betrayal, framing the attacks on Ichigo's friends as a lure. Ichigo secretly observes Isshin and Urahara meeting but declines to follow. Riruka begins a new training round by sealing Ichigo in a tank alongside Jackie Tristan.
