Summary

As the institute passes word of Ichigo Kurosaki's return along to the messenger corps for the Gotei 13, Urahara asks Orihime Inoue and Yasutora Sado to recover the medallion from Quilge Opie's body, promising to explain Ichigo's departure later. Traveling the Garganta, Ichigo receives the grim tally: the vanished spiritual pressure of 2,245 rank-and-file soldiers, fifty-six seated officers, and a single lieutenant, all still climbing. When he asks whether lost pressure means death, Akon admits uncertainty and adds, unprompted, that the lieutenant is neither Rukia nor Renji. He explains that at least sixteen white-clad foes each rival a captain in strength, have taken no losses, and, hardest to accept, can wrest a Shinigami's Bankai away from them, a claim confirmed by four captains who lost theirs.

Key Events

Urahara joins the line with data gathered during the earlier duel and lays out three Quincy strengths: the transforming Vollständig, the Blut system that channels Reishi into the veins for either attack or defense but never both, and the Bankai-thieving medallions he intends to dissect. He stresses that the Wandenreich could not claim Ichigo's Bankai and, unsure why, guesses they timed their assault to strand him in Hueco Mundo out of special caution toward him, all the more reason to hurry onward. The talk breaks off when Reishi seals the exit ahead; Urahara turns to find an arrow buried in his back and Sado and Orihime pierced through. Rising on the strings of Ransōtengai, Quilge refuses to let Ichigo pass, obeying an order to hold him at any cost, and floods the Garganta with Reishi that hardens into a barred cage. Cackling, he seals the far end as well and tells Ichigo to wait there until Soul Society falls.

Notes

The tenth and final chapter of the fifty-sixth volume, March of the StarCross, this installment was adapted as part of episode 370. It functions largely as an exposition beat, using Urahara's analysis to formalize the Quincy powers that will shape the rest of the war, before the cliffhanger imprisonment strands the story's central fighter far from the battle he is desperate to join.
