He is most at home behind a saxophone, and during his final scheme he even veils himself in a hooded cloak to pass for a woman resembling Julia. The show's character designer first sketched him after Brad Pitt before reworking the look.

Beneath the soldier's history sits a gentle, searching man who longs for connection. Gren treasures the notion of comradeship so deeply that the very word moves him nearly to tears, and he once pushed his company on the solitary Vicious simply to talk over a shared tune. That same yearning curdles into obsession once he comes to believe his old ally sold him out. The betrayal, real or imagined, hardens the wistful musician into someone willing to stage an elaborate trap and walk knowingly toward his own end for the sake of an answer.

Gren's early years leave little record beyond photographs of a warm childhood and a close bond with his mother. Reaching adulthood, he enlists and ships out for the Titan War, drawn into the same company as Vicious. He tries to befriend the loner, joining him between battles and asking about a melody from a small music box; Vicious lets him keep the trinket, kills a scorpion near his head as a parting jolt, and unknowingly leaves a hidden solar tracker in Gren's hands. Across the campaign, Gren grows to respect Vicious as a fighter.

Peace brings ruin. A military court convicts Gren of spying and sends him to prison, where he catches whispers that Vicious gave the testimony that condemned him. The strain drives him to an experimental sedative whose side effects remake his body, and he eventually breaks out. He resurfaces on Callisto in the town of Blue Crow, a place empty of women, renting rooms at the Orlando Apartments and blowing saxophone nightly at the Rester House. In 2069 Julia wanders into the bar, returns almost every evening for a month, and befriends him, often requesting the song that bears her name and speaking of a man called Spike. When Gren shows her the music box, she recognizes its danger and urges him to open it, exposing the tracker inside. His rage reignites, and he resolves to draw Vicious out and demand the truth.

Gren baits the trap in 2071, staging a Red Eye deal under Julia's name to lure Vicious to Callisto. The night before, he crosses paths with Faye Valentine and, sensing trouble, brings her home; she uncovers both his ties to Vicious and his intersex body, then tries to shoot him, only for Gren to disarm her and leave her cuffed to his bed. Disguised on a rooftop, he meets Vicious with a bag of Red Eye and the music box tucked inside. After Lin inspects the drug, Gren nods to the long-dead scorpion to reveal himself, kicks over the case, and shoots it, triggering the blast. Vicious escapes unhurt while Lin is wounded. Gren fires on Vicious, but Lin throws himself into the shot and dies. Both men race for their ships; Vicious downs Gren's zipcraft, yet the Red Eye he carried detonates and drives him off before he can finish the job. Mortally hurt, Gren finally meets Spike and understands he is the man Julia spoke of so often, though he can offer no news of where she is. His last request is for Spike to power his engines and tow the craft into orbit toward Titan, where he means to rest; he dies somewhere along the way.
