Mark Manly

Mark sports thinning ginger hair offset by a thick, full beard, with blue eyes rounding out his face. He dresses for status in a fancy suit and black shoes, the image of a man trying to project more polish than he actually carries.

Timid and spineless, Mark folds the instant real pressure lands on him. He is the sort who talks a smooth game as a swindler yet crumbles the moment a target turns the tables.

Mark works for a cryostasis company and teams with Whitney Haggis Matsumoto to fleece people thawed too early out of their belongings. Faye Valentine corners him at an opera theater over the theft of her identikit and other property, and under her pressure he phones Whitney, dangling a lead on another amnesiac target to exploit. Before that can go anywhere, the Callisto Liberation Front storms the venue and takes both Mark and a woman named Cadena captive. Lined up as a test subject for a terraforming grenade, Mark instead knocks the device loose, and the discharge turns Cadena into a tree. He is then hauled off to the group's base, where he too is converted into a tree away from view. Faye later locates his transformed body while trying to retrieve the phone from his jacket.
