Ikki Niko

Niko is built along lean, unremarkable lines, neither tall nor obviously powerful, which lets rivals underrate him at a glance. His black hair is short and faintly spiky, dropping far enough to hide both eyes, though he sees through the fringe well enough to compete at the top level. Inside Blue Lock he wears the issued black bodysuit with gray striping and the matching tracksuit.

His shirt changed with each stage of the program. First Selection put him in Team Y's red jersey with vertical black stripes and the number seven; Second Selection moved him to Team Red's sixty-three; the Third saw him in Team B's white sixty-three. For the showdown with Japan's U-20 he pulled on an official Blue Lock jersey bearing the number three.

Away from the pitch Niko keeps to himself, an introvert with an otaku streak who rarely reaches out and would rather stay inside his own bubble. When he does speak he is courteous and measured. That politeness evaporates against opponents, where he turns needling and sarcastic, tossing quietly cruel jabs at whoever lines up across from him. He is fiercely proud of his mind and his read of the field, once telling Yoichi Isagi that the two of them shared identical eyes before claiming he was the better of the pair.

What sets Niko apart is his willingness to remake himself. Beaten by Isagi in First Selection, he resolved to stop playing scared and to chase his own ambitions refusing to slip out of the limelight. Once the U-20 clash arrived, he found that he actually relished dropping into defense, wielding his sight to shut down the opposing forwards. Reshaping both his role and his approach in service of his ego costs him nothing.

Niko is classed as a possession center-back, a defender who wins the ball through intelligence rather than muscle, snuffing out danger by reading passes and cutting them off at the source. His signature is total field awareness: he absorbs the positions, movements, and passing choices of every player, calculates where the greatest threat is forming, and moves to erase it. Isagi himself has marveled at how much of the pitch Niko takes in, and across the Neo Egoist League that vision sharpened to the point of picking the ball off Isagi and rival strikers time and again.

His defensive method, dubbed Watchtower Soccer, has him fix his gaze not on the ball carrier but on the players around him, pinpointing the most dangerous run and severing it before it develops. Using it he twice picked off Sae's passes, denying deliveries meant for Shuto Sendo and Shido. To offset his slight frame he spent the run-up to the U-20 World Cup building his body, developing enough core strength to wrestle with the taller Nigerian players.

He also awakened Metavision, an elevated sight that hands a player a near-omniscient view of the field by constantly harvesting information from central and peripheral vision. Against Bastard Munchen he unlocked it and began scanning at blistering speed, though his version lags behind other users for want of the peripheral input they rely on. Locked onto prying the ball loose from Rensuke Kunigami, he never noticed Jingo Raichi slipping into his blind spot.
