He journeyed to Konohagakure to enter the Chūnin Exams, joined by his younger brother Sazanami and their comrade Makinami. Sprinting toward the testing grounds with the rest of the hopefuls, the trio slipped past every trap and reached Venue B. A true-or-false challenge there dropped the contestants toward a basin of ink, but the three kept clear of it and advanced past the first stage. Three days on, the second round pitted them against Team Konohamaru in a contest to seize each other's banner. They screened their own flag with genjutsu and pressed toward the enemy's, which Boruto and his clones defended. After scattering the clones they reached for the prize, only to be halted by Boruto's elemental strikes, and while they were pinned down Sarada Uchiha claimed their flag, knocking the team out of the exam.
