Hunting for a fitting victim to verify the second Kira's identity, Higuchi selects Kaneboshi for Misa Amane to eliminate. Misa only feigns the killing; in truth it is Rem who writes his name in the Death Note. When Higuchi telephones one of the loan shark's bodyguards to check, the man reports that Kaneboshi has just collapsed before hurriedly ending the call, the confirmation Higuchi needs to be certain Misa is the second Kira.
