With fifteen years in the cockpit behind him, Block holds his nerve and his authority under strain, coolly deceiving ground control as he carries out the hijacking pressed on him by the Mafia.
History
Flight SE333 lifts off from Tokyo's Narita Airport on a Los Angeles route, and almost at once Block secures and silences his co-pilot before nudging the jet off its heading. Ground control radios in as the deviation shows, but he tells them everything is in hand, claiming the flight will swing aside to let a passenger off; they are welcome to follow on radar, he adds, though any alarm or meddling will see him bring the plane down and kill all aboard. He declares an emergency landing and touches down in a stretch of desert, where Soichiro Yagami alone climbs out to swap the Death Note for the freedom of his abducted daughter, Sayu. The jet continues to Los Angeles, and there the Mafia turn the notebook on Block himself.
