Misa Amane's stalker

He is a slight, unremarkable figure. Short hair, narrow dark eyes, and a pair of glasses are about all the story grants him.

Nothing of him surfaces beyond his fixation. He accosts a woman he has never actually met, declares his love, and on being refused decides that if he cannot have her, the two of them will die together, a delusion that drives him to draw a knife.

His ambush was meant to be the end of Misa's life. As he corners her, a Shinigami called Gelus is watching through an observation hole, and having grown to love her, he intervenes the only way he can. Gelus writes the stalker's name into his notebook, dictating that the man drop the blade and walk off, and moments later the would-be killer falls dead of a heart attack. The act costs Gelus everything: extending a human's life breaks a cardinal rule of his kind, so he dissolves into dust, his Death Note left behind. Rem, who had been observing alongside him, carries that notebook down to the human world and lets Misa find it, an encounter that introduces the two and launches Misa's path toward Kira. In the live-action films the stalker is named Ryotaro Sakajo and works as the assistant director on Misa's cooking program, while the television drama recasts him as a concert security guard called Tsutomu Yukida.
