Unnamed Shinigami

Character

This nameless shinigami bookends the OVA Death Note Relight 1, serving as the listener whose curiosity prompts Ryuk to recount Light Yagami's saga. Restless and bored with the Shinigami Realm much as Ryuk once was, he trades an apple for tips on reaching the Human World, then slips away before the tale is even finished.

Appearance

Gaunt and bone-like, the creature still holds a roughly human shape, though it moves with a limp suggesting an injured leg. A broad mouth fixed in something like a grin sits beneath vivid red eyes, and spiked hair is bound back by a red necktie worn as a headband. It sports a coat and goggles, totes a messenger bag, and hauls around a big skeletal implement it swings as a hammer.

Personality

His outlook closely echoes Ryuk's own restlessness from before that shinigami crossed over, weariness with the dull Shinigami Realm chief among his grievances. On the surface he simply expects the human world to offer more excitement. His abrupt exit before Ryuk wraps up the story, however, hints that he may be chasing motives he keeps to himself.

History

Drawn by news of Ryuk's trip below, he sets out to track the older shinigami down and finds him perched on a mountaintop, climbing up to join him. He produces a shinigami apple as payment for learning how one passes into the human world, and although the fruit fails to fully please Ryuk, Ryuk agrees to relate what happened with Light Yagami and the Death Note. He never hears the ending; fixed on the world below, he leaves mid-story, prompting Ryuk to muse that Light was no god at the start and to suggest he seek out some equally extraordinary human of his own. Fans long speculated the figure was Light reborn, a theory since dismissed yet still circulated, and the OVA's original captions labeled him ST.
