Yonegoro Nusumi

A red bow tie sits at the collar of his white dress shirt, worn with plain jeans. Short brown hair spikes upward, his eyes are dark, and he keeps a pair of glasses on.

Nusumi's record is ugly. He assaulted several women and slipped free of the courts when prosecutors could not assemble enough evidence, which marks him in the story as exactly the kind of unpunished offender Kira hunts.

On December 27, 2003, Light needs to prove his identity to Raye Penber, the FBI agent trailing him. Hood drawn over his face, he corners Penber outside CAFEEL, the coffee shop tucked into the underground level of Shinjuku Station, where Nusumi works. At three in the afternoon Light announces that the waiter visible through the window, then sweeping the floor, has roughly two minutes left. Five minutes past the hour, Nusumi collapses from a heart attack exactly on cue.

The demonstration works. Convinced he is dealing with Kira, Penber obeys Light's commands, a chain of compliance that ends with twelve FBI agents dead. Light never speaks the waiter's name aloud, yet it surfaces afterward in his notebook, penciled directly over Penber's own. Later, retracing Penber's final days, Naomi Misora walks past the same shop and recalls that four deaths occurred close to the station that afternoon, a sign she had registered what happened at CAFEEL. The live-action films swap the scene out, with Light instead killing a man named Taruhito Ozaki beside the agent Raye Iwamatsu aboard a train.
