History

The invitation is a ploy. Light needs Raye Penber's full name for the Death Note, and a public date lets him maneuver without alarming the agent trailing him. When Kiichiro Osoreda hijacks their bus, Light hands Yuri a note about rushing the gunman, baiting Penber into warning him off. Light then floats the idea that Penber could be the hijacker's accomplice, which pressures the agent into flashing his identification, the very thing Light wanted. Light drops a slip of his notebook; Osoreda grabs it, finds only date plans, looks up to see Ryuk, empties his gun at the death god, and flees, only to be killed by a passing car exactly as written. Shaken but undeterred, Yuri insists on continuing the date, and Light obliges while Ryuk marvels at human stubbornness. Afterward, Light asks her to keep the day private.

Her name means lily, and supplementary notes say she and Light were close even before the notebook entered his life. In the live-action films the hijacking instead features a girl named Shiori Akino, while the drama puts Light on the bus by himself.
