Gameplay

Each round cycles through an investigation phase, where the task force trades clues and alibis, a voting phase, where members cast suspicion on whoever seems most likely to be Kira or L, and a confrontation phase, where the player either narrows in on one suspect or moves to eliminate a rival. Playing as Light means avoiding exposure while thinning out the task force; playing as L means gathering enough evidence to unmask Kira before time runs out. Up to nineteen characters from the story can be selected across the story and multiplayer modes, with additional human players able to join the investigation team.

Premise

The story mode retells the opening half of the Death Note manga, from Light Yagami picking up the notebook through his early duel of wits with L, but frames it as a replayable strategy match rather than a straight cutscene adaptation. Choosing a side changes what the player actually experiences: the Kira campaign plays out as evasion and misdirection, while the L campaign plays out as detective work built on incomplete information.

Release

Konami both developed and published Kira Game, releasing it for the Nintendo DS in Japan on February 15, 2007. It never received an international release, so the game and its packaging exist only in Japanese, and it remains accessible outside Japan mainly through import copies or DS emulation.
