Gameplay

Fights are one on one battles where each player controls a team of three characters and can swap between them mid match, moving around open 3D arenas while chaining combos and special moves drawn from each character's source series. The story mode ties dozens of Jump franchises together around an invasion that pulls fictional characters into a real world setting.

Premise

Producer Koji Nakajima said directly that Death Note was not built to have a fighting game character, and Bandai Namco pointed to Light Yagami's lack of physical combat skills and to Ryuk's abilities being awkward to translate into a fighting engine. Instead of joining the playable roster, Light and Ryuk appear in cutscenes to help weave the story's various worlds together, with Ryuk's godly Death Note powers treated as too strong to balance as a fighting move set.
