Saburo

Saburo is a middle-aged man of average height, partly bald with thinning, messy black hair at the front. He has keen brown eyes and a pointed chin, and his face often carries an anxious, serious look born of his dread of demons.

He dresses plainly in a gray yukata under an olive-drab haori, with loose light-green trousers, black socks, and green sandals.

Saburo is perceptive and sincere, especially toward the young Tanjiro, whom he offers shelter for a night because he believes man-eating demons roam after sundown and that travel would be unsafe.

His firsthand knowledge of demons and the slayers who hunt them leaves him far more wary and uneasy than an ordinary person, a fear rooted in the deaths of his own family.

Long ago Saburo lost his family in a demon attack. The tragedy left him fearful of the night and confined indoors, and it made him aware that the Demon Slayer Corps exists. Living alone, he keeps to caution after dark.

When he spots Tanjiro returning toward the mountain late in the day, he persuades the boy to spend the night, explaining over dinner that demons emerge after dark and even enter homes, which is why slayers exist to destroy them. Years later, after Tanjiro and his companions recover and head home, the two reunite at the foot of the mountain and embrace in tears.
