Appearance and Personality

Tengen is exceptionally tall, broad, and muscular, with lightly tanned skin and uneven white hair styled with shorter clumps falling between his eyes. His thin, dark-fuchsia eyes slant inward, each trailing a long eyelash, and he paints his nails in claret and bright green. Many consider him strikingly handsome, a trait he uses on missions. He customizes a sleeveless version of the Corps uniform and decorates himself lavishly with arm rings, a jeweled headband, and red eye makeup. After losing his left eye and hand to Gyutaro, he retires and adopts an eyepatch and a long burgundy yukata.

Background and Story Role

A former member of a shinobi clan, Tengen left that life and joined the Corps, rising to Sound Hashira. He brings his three wives, all kunoichi, on missions and works with Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke during the Yoshiwara campaign. In the brutal fight against the sibling Upper Rank Six, Daki and Gyutaro, he loses an eye and a hand but contributes to their defeat.

Crippled by these injuries, Tengen retires from active duty. He does not vanish from the story, however: he later serves as a bodyguard alongside Shinjuro Rengoku, protecting the young leader Kiriya Ubuyashiki and the family during the final war. He survives the conflict and lives on past the defeat of Muzan.

Abilities

As the Sound Hashira, Tengen was an elite swordsman who wielded Sound Breathing with twin oversized Nichirin cleavers chained together. His shinobi training gave him explosives expertise, and he could read the rhythm of combat through a method he called musical score, anticipating an opponent's movements as patterns of sound. His immense size and strength complemented his speed, making him a powerful frontline fighter until his injuries ended his career.
