On the 104th's final night as trainees, Franz helps Mikasa pull apart a brawl between Eren and Jean, then hauls the unconscious Eren to his bunk afterward. The next day he strolls through Trost with Hannah and Eren, trading hopeful talk about humanity's improving fortunes until an irritated Eren mockingly labels the pair a couple, flustering them both.
When the Colossus Titan strikes Trost, Franz steadies the panicking Hannah and promises to watch over her no matter what happens. The vow outlives him by hours: Armin later comes upon Hannah frantically performing CPR on what remains of his body.
His name echoes the Czech writer Franz Kafka, while Hannah's surname matches that of Dora Diamant, Kafka's companion during his final year. He also shares a birthday with Armin's father.
