Barachiel

Barachiel looks like a bacterium blown up to kaiju scale. A membrane of yellow fluid envelops a dark sphere seated at the creature's dead center, and long spines stretch internally from that sphere out to the membrane's rim. The central orb appears to serve as the core. Judging by the sole piece of official artwork, the Angel dwarfs nearby structures and can be picked out by Unit-01 from a considerable distance.

A color card printed for the game renders the name as Baraqijal, an odd romanization of the katakana. The actual namesake is the archangel Barachiel venerated in Judaism and in the Byzantine Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions.

As a scenario boss, Barachiel receives tactics rather than a psyche. Its behavior reads as animal and cyclical: threatened, it retreats underwater; drained, it restocks on lake water; recovered, it resurfaces to attack again. The rulebook expresses its whole nature through combat logic, from acid spraying down to a fallback crushing routine. Should its corrosive reserves run dry or be chemically neutralized, spines punch outward through its skin in the manner of a sea urchin and the Angel tries to flatten enemies by rolling across them.

The Angel surfaces in Tokyo-3, where it answers Evangelion assaults by parting its A.T. Field and dousing attackers in corrosive liquid. How badly a machine suffers depends on each player's EVA Manipulation rating, and the damage persists until the acid gets rinsed away. Once enough of the substance has been discharged, Barachiel sinks into Lake Ashinoko and goes still. Ritsuko notices the lake's pH drifting toward acidic and projects from the water readings that activity resumes on October 30, 2015.

Working alongside Marie Vincennes, NERV drafts a counterplan: dig a pitfall in central Tokyo-3, bait the Angel into it, pin it there with one Evangelion, and send a second unit wearing D-Type Equipment to cancel the A.T. Field before pumping alkaline water inside the creature to neutralize its acid. Misato repurposes a site struck by an earlier Angel, hardening it against corrosion, while Ritsuko and Maya develop the alkaline mix and a new weapon. When Barachiel wakes on schedule, terrorist strikes against the outside power stations rule out umbilical supply, so batteries designed by Dr. Vincennes double each unit's operating charge from five minutes to ten. Finishing the fight inside that window wins the scenario and exposes who stands behind the terror attacks.
