Ramiel

Nothing about Ramiel suggests a living thing at first glance. The Angel presents as an enormous geometric solid, two pyramids fused base to base into a floating octahedron whose polished blue faces mirror the sky around it. No limbs, sensory organs, or mouth break the perfect symmetry, and the only sound it produces is an eerie choir endlessly repeating a single F note as it drifts forward.

The clean crystal exterior hides organic tissue underneath. When NERV crews later strip the carcass apart, raw red patches appear wherever plating is removed, proof that blood runs beneath the mineral shell. A massive drill can also telescope out of the body, a boring tool the Angel aims straight down when it wants to tunnel.

Ramiel behaves less like a creature and more like an automated weapons platform. It never chases its enemies. Instead it parks itself above its objective and answers any threat entering its firing radius with an instant, flawlessly aimed energy blast, even registering targets moving underground or beyond its normal engagement range.

That patience conceals total commitment to a single goal. While its defenses hold everything at bay, the Angel devotes itself to grinding through Tokyo-3's armor plating, intent on reaching NERV headquarters inside the Geofront below. It shows no curiosity, no hesitation, and no reaction to anything that is not an immediate threat.

Ramiel glides in from the sea toward Tokyo-3, and NERV sorties Unit-01 with no intelligence on what the enemy can do. The Angel senses the Eva before it even reaches street level, and its particle beam punches through an intervening building and nearly burns through the unit's chest, almost killing Shinji Ikari in the entry plug. It then extends its drill and begins boring toward headquarters. Tests with an inflatable decoy Eva and a Type-12 mortar confirm the grim picture: perfect accuracy against anything in range, backed by the strongest A.T. Field yet recorded, one so powerful it visibly bends light and demands roughly 180 million kilowatts to breach.

Since no Eva can close the distance, Misato Katsuragi devises Operation Yashima. Japan's entire electrical grid is routed into a prototype positron rifle for Unit-01 to fire from long range while Unit-00 stands by holding a shield improvised from an SSTO spacecraft's heat plating. The first exchange fails when both beams fire simultaneously and warp each other off course. Ramiel's follow-up blast batters Unit-00's shield to its limit, but Unit-01's second round drills through the Angel and kills it, moments before its bit would have broken into the Geofront. The enormous body slumps to the ground, where NERV spends weeks dismantling it with cranes.

The manga stages the same battle with an almost identical outcome. Elsewhere, Shinji Ikari Raising Project reimagines Ramiel as a SEELE program invading the MAGI in virtual space, defeated by a digital rifle shot, while Gakuen Datenroku casts it as the opening antagonist, appearing in human guises and hurling lightning before Kaworu Nagisa claims its core. Its design, a tribute to the Super X of Future Police Urashiman, barely changed from the earliest production proposal.
