Sachiel

A gaunt giant slightly bigger than an Evangelion, Sachiel moves equally well through water and on land, though its proportions are all wrong for anything human. The arms dangle past the knees, the legs stretch unnaturally long, and where a head should sit there is only a barely mobile bony structure shaped like a bird's skull, complete with an elongated beak. Deep inside its sockets glow red irises, and a spherical core sits embedded at the solar plexus. After regenerating from an N² blast, the Angel sprouts a second, shorter-beaked face out of its chest. Its blood runs a bluish purple, a color observed in no other Angel.

Its biology gets stranger below the waist: gills along the thighs draw breath in while a nostril arrangement at the crotch exhales, a system that doubles as underwater propulsion. For weapons it extends a pair of lance-like bones from each forearm, structures it can energize for extra destructive force, and its regenerated second face can project long-range energy blasts that detonate in crucifix-shaped bursts. It can also swell its muscle mass under strain, vault enormous distances by pushing off its own A.T. Field, and, when all else fails, curl its body around an enemy and self-destruct.

What makes Sachiel unsettling is its indifference. Marching through the JSSDF's full arsenal, it barely acknowledges the attack, adapting to each weapon and continuing forward; when it finally downs a VTOL, it does so almost curiously, the way a person swats an insect. Only upon reaching Tokyo-3 does the Angel turn genuinely violent, and once its survival is threatened it commits without hesitation to mutual destruction, choosing to detonate itself rather than simply die.

Sachiel first surfaces swimming through a drowned city east of Tokyo-3 before wading ashore into the waiting JSSDF. Conventional arms accomplish nothing, and even a surprise missile barrage only staggers it briefly. Desperate, the military baits the Angel to Mt. Takanosu and detonates an N² mine under its feet, vaporizing roughly eighteen percent of its mass. The wound buys time but not victory; Sachiel regrows the damage, a fresh facial plate shoving the ruined mask upward, and resumes its advance while NERV scrambles Unit-01 into service.

Inside the city the Angel turns aggressive, firing a cross-shaped column of light that bores down toward the Geofront. It then encounters the newly activated Unit-01 under the untrained Shinji Ikari, who stumbles within his first few steps. Sachiel methodically snaps the Eva's arm, seizes its head, and rams a forearm lance through the skull, hurling the machine into a building. Then Unit-01 reactivates on its own. Berserk, it tears at the Angel's face plate, regrows its broken arm, and erodes Sachiel's A.T. Field with its own. A point-blank cross explosion fails to stop the rampage; the Eva snaps both of the Angel's arms, kicks it into a building, pounds its core, and finally saws at the sphere with one of Sachiel's own broken ribs. Sensing death, Sachiel wraps itself around Unit-01's head and self-destructs in a towering pillar of cruciform light, but the Eva strides out of the blast only moderately damaged.

In Sadamoto's manga the choreography changes, with the fight opening under a different pilot and the Angel relying on nimble lance work before the same self-destruct ending. Sachiel also brawls as a playable fighter in Battle Orchestra, joins the mass Angel assault of the Iron Maiden 2nd, and plays a comic kaiju in Petit Eva. The design came from manga artist Yoshitoh Asari, evolved from a prototype of his Wahhaman character Ishtar, and it makes a rare second appearance as a holographic training target in Episode 03.
