Calvary Base

Calvary Base is a NERV installation in the Rebuild of Evangelion continuity, occupying the spot where Second Impact took place at the planet's former South Pole. Viewed from a distance, the site presents five crosses, four upright and one leaning, each wreathed in a rainbow colored halo rising from beneath the L-Containment Field Barrier. Across the terrain at ground zero spreads a gigantic geoglyph shaped like a seraph, broken by a central pit edged in purple light that dwarfs even the NHG series airships. The name references the formation outside Jerusalem's walls where, according to the Gospels, Jesus was crucified.

The base hosts the climactic clash of Operation Yamato, WILLE's final offensive against NERV. The surrounding L-Containment Field rejects all life stained by original sin, as Midori Kitakami describes it, and Koji Takao explains that crossing the purified zone depends on the Anti-L System built into WILLE plugsuits together with Kaji's data. Misato Katsuragi brands the place the Gates of Hell, all the more once she suspects NERV intends to repeat the method behind Second Impact to trigger a Fourth, though Ritsuko counters that what is actually being attempted remains unknown. Evangelion Mark.09-A then commandeers the AAA Wunder to continue the forced conversion of the Black Moon into spears; driven into the pit at ground zero, the process turns ancient life into cores that merge with the Eva Infinities and set Fourth Impact in motion.

NERV controls the facility. The WILLE personnel who confront it during Operation Yamato include Misato Katsuragi, Ritsuko Akagi, Midori Kitakami, and Koji Takao, while Evangelion Mark.09-A acts as NERV's instrument on site.
