Evangelion Unit-02 Type II

The Neon Genesis Evangelion: ANIMA novel presents this machine as the evolutionary next step for Unit-02, keeping the red and orange scheme while thickening the silhouette. During the prologue's clash with the Mass Production Evangelions a replica Spear of Longinus impaled the original, ruining its optic nerves, so the rebuild swaps the four main cameras for a single pair.

To buy mobility and range, engineers strip out the umbilical power system entirely. In its place a rectenna receives energy as microwaves beamed from NERV Japan's Maser transmission towers, which draw on the S² Engine recovered from Ramiel. Electromagnetic interference can slash transmission efficiency by more than half, yet the arrangement carries the Eva far past any cable's reach. Operating time grows, and hardware derived from Unit-01's S² Engine technology is fitted wherever compatibility allows.

Its arsenal mixes steel and railgun science. The Bizen Osafune, a two-handed sword descended from the Magorox, projects the A.T. Field along its edge. The New Type Pallet Rifle "Powered 8" applies railgun engineering for efficiency, clips onto rails in the shoulder pylons, and spawned research into a long-barreled variant meant to fire A.T. Fields through enemy barriers. On Misato's order, Asuka also recovers the Longinus replica from Pandora's Box, where it has vibrated ceaselessly since the failed Third Impact, even submerged in liquid nitrogen.

When the first Angel Carrier assaults NERV Japan, Asuka chases it down into the old Geofront and finishes it with the replica spear. A second Carrier proves crueler: it turns her rifle fire with a shield, drinks the spear into the red cocoon on its torso through Leliel's stolen power, and hammers her unprotected arms. Asuka retaliates by hurling her cross-shaped rectenna at the Carrier's feet and calling down the Maser cannon, overcharging the antenna into an electromagnetic blast that engulfs a five-hundred-meter radius. The newly awakened Super Evangelion then draws the survivor's attention, battering through its shield with bare fists while Asuka circles, snipes a shoulder pylon, and shatters one glowing Q.R. Signum; a field-sheathed kick from Unit-01 destroys the other, the Carrier disintegrates, and Type II sinks to its knees with its battery drained.

Ahead of the lunar expedition Asuka has the unit repainted the color of the Moon for camouflage, and the UX-1 Allegorica flight package converts it into Evangelion Unit-02 Type II Allegorica.

Asuka Langley Sohryu pilots the machine, with her mother Kyoko Zeppelin Sohryu as the soul inside its core. One discarded repair plan would have grafted the preserved head of Unit-00 onto the badly damaged frame to speed recommissioning, abandoned over the strong risk of a mismatch between pilot and transplanted part. The mobile game Super Robot Wars X-Ω seats Asuka Shikinami Langley in it instead, and in June 2025 Dragonhorse announced a CCSTOYS figure of the unit bundled with its spear, rectenna, umbilical cable, shield, N² bomb rack, and both Powered 8 configurations.
