A filler arc of the original Naruto anime in which Team 7 guards a runner through a treacherous annual race in the Land of Tea. Their charge turns out to be Idate Morino, a bitter ex-genin whose old wounds tie back to Konoha itself.
Running across episodes 102 to 106, this anime-original arc follows the Search for Tsunade and comes before the Sasuke Recovery Mission. Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura journey into the Land of Tea, where they must carry a runner named Idate Morino across the finish line of a perilous annual contest.
With Konoha's jonin ranks thinned by Orochimaru's failed invasion, Tsunade is left leaning on genin for jobs above their usual grade. Team 7, minus Kakashi, is assigned to shepherd a Wasabi family runner across a hazardous yearly race, rumor holding that the rival Wagarashi family has hired shinobi to sabotage them. On the way the squad crosses paths with a brash, ninja-hating youth named Idate, who flaunts his blazing speed by sprinting off after sticking them with his restaurant tab. Once they reach their destination and are introduced to the Wasabi leader Jirocho, the team is stunned to find that Idate is the very runner they have been assigned to protect.
As the race unfolds, Naruto and Idate keep trading barbs, and it comes out that Idate is Ibiki's younger brother and once a Konoha genin himself. The runners meet the three Ame genin last seen at the Chunin Exams and put them down, only for Aoi Rokusho to appear, a former Konoha shinobi who defected to Amegakure. Aoi had been Idate's teacher and the reason he fled the village. Surviving Aoi's assault, Idate recounts how, after Ibiki failed him at the Chunin Exams, Aoi manipulated him into stealing a secret scroll and the fabled Sword of the Thunder God. Recognizing his own history of being used and of craving acknowledgment, Naruto helps Idate rebuild his self-worth and press on.
Aoi resurfaces as the runners close the gap, and the Thunder God blade at first overwhelms Team 7. Sasuke wears the weapon down with his Chidori, letting Naruto shatter it in a clash and finish Aoi with a Rasengan. Free of the threat, Idate races on to claim victory for the Wasabi family. At the ceremony, Kyuroku tries to void the win by claiming Naruto carrying Idate broke the rules, but the Daimyo instead exposes Kyuroku and his minister as the true cheats, sending the minister off to a monastery and disbanding the Wagarashi family. Ibiki personally escorts the team home, quietly grateful that Naruto helped his younger brother grow into a man.
