Ameno keeps her brown hair, long enough to frame her features, gathered into a ponytail held by a pink band, and her eyes are a pale brown set off by full lashes over fair skin. Her sleeveless white top carries the Suna emblem on its right side and is cinched with a reddish-purple sash and a brown cord. She rounds out the look with black shorts, a forehead protector wrapped around each wrist, and laced open-toed boots in brown.

A gentle, courteous streak runs through Ameno, evident when she tended to Sakura Haruno despite the two being strangers. Underneath that kindness sits a steady, practical composure; she flatly noted that no one belonged out in the desert after dark and offered her aid without fuss. Her loyalty to her fellow shinobi runs deep, so deep that she waved away payment from another Suna squad even while plainly worn out from the effort. Combat brings out a relentless side, yet she clings to her calling as a healer and works to spare her foes as much harm as she can manage.

Ameno ranks as an accomplished medical-nin, quickening the body's own recovery by channelling chakra from her palms into an injury, and she has the precision for delicate work, drawing a swarm of poison barbs out of a patient. Water Release rounds out her toolkit, most often in service of her medicine: she can neutralise poison-related wounds, hold water in reserve as a safeguard that heals herself and her allies against incoming strikes, or shape it into enormous pincers to strike enemies from a distance.

During the Chūnin Exams portrayed in the anime, Ameno and her teammates Kōji and Shishio cleared the opening phase and survived a qualifying race back to Sunagakure. She healed the wounded Sakura one night, and later, on principle, treated a rival Suna-nin's poisoning before politely refusing his scroll. When her team finally clashed with Team Asuma at an oasis, she and Kōji pressed Sakura and Chōji hard in close quarters, but the group was ultimately beaten. True to form, Ameno and the other medical kunoichi patched everyone up without any lingering resentment, and the shinobi agreed to reunite in the finals, though the exams were called off early amid controversy.
