Where other children were guarded, she spends her time taking apart light bulbs and devouring scientific texts alone. She eventually joins the Cultural Institute and sets up an underground laboratory in Konohagakure inside Furie Kanhen's former home. Her first field is astrophysics, and across roughly six months of watching the skies she spots a star drifting on a strange path, weaving north to south as it circles another star, though the Institute dismisses her claim that such a body exists.

A formidable mind rather than a fighter, she fills her lab with about a thousand Petri dishes of liquid chakra, chasing a device that could put multipotent chakra to use and even regrow cells such as skin, nails, or a heart. She works out that the unstable Polar particles have a vulnerability to water, and she also builds unique equipment like the Liquid Crystal Wall. Physical strength is not her weapon; she defends her designs with whatever is at hand, down to an ordinary ballpoint pen, and a scientific ninja tool lets her hurl fireballs. In Naruto Retsuden, the Seventh Hokage stumbles onto her hidden shelter while training with glasses that grant the Byakugan, and she attacks him as a suspected thief before recognising him and offering tea. Their partnership survives a drone strike that levels her lab and a brakeless motorcycle chase that ends with Yamato saving them, and it carries on in a new cave laboratory shared with Orochimaru, Suigetsu, and Karin. Chihare ultimately finds a way to cure the illness plaguing Naruto through the Polar particles, is briefly kidnapped by Cultural Institute envoys serving Furie Kanhen's agenda, and is rescued by Naruto and Orochimaru. After a daring plan to harvest fresh particles from the very celestial body she once tracked, she declines an offer to lead the Institute and returns to her research.
